About Us

An Introduction to Pilning & Severn Beach Local History Group - by Joan.H

In 1999 a small group of people met to consider forming a local history group the idea having been suggested by Peter Tyzack. This led to the formation in the year 2000 of the Pilning and Severn beach Local History Group.

A video called "Return to Severn Beach" was produced in 2002 and later in 2004 a book named "Around Severn Beach" was published.

At the moment there is a committee of twelve members who meet once a month.

There are approximately seventy members in all who pay £2 a year membership fee and receive information in a news letter every three months.

Exhibitions and talks illustrated by films and slides are arranged periodically. Recently there has been a Brunel display locally, and an exhibition in Thornbury museum, mainly to do with local railways and artifacts from Severn Beach.

Work on oral history and a heritage trail is going on at the moment.

Would anyone who is interested in talking about their memories please contact Valerie George.

There will hopefully be Postcards on sale at various outlets in the district soon.

The video "Return to Severn Beach" can be obtained from 1st Take Videos, Yate. It is also obtainable on DVD.

Around Severn Beach - Book

This fascinating collection of over 200 archive photographs highlights some of the changes and developments that have taken place in and around Severn Beach during the last century.

In 1922 a station was built at Severn Beach by the GWR and the village quickly flourished into a busy riverside resort. By the 1930s there were shops and amusements available to the crowds that came by train from Bristol at weekends. There was a large hotel and a boating lake, and many cafes catered for the visitors; however, by far the most popular attraction was the Blue Lagoon swimming pool, built in the early 1930s. Severn Beach soon became known as 'the Blackpool of the West'. Life in the surrounding villages is also recalled here, including Pilning, Redwick, Easter Compton, Almondsbury, Tockington and Elberton.
