Cash injection for Operation Biker (Bristol)
Police in south Bristol have welcomed a cash boost from Bristol City Council Parks Department to support their 'Operation Biker' initiative which resulted in the seizure of more than 100 motorcycles and mini-motos last year.

Many of the bikes were being ridden in parks and open spaces without permission or insurance and represented a potential danger to both the rider and public. There is currently no public land in the city where riders can take such vehicles to use them.

Neighbourhood policing sergeant Tim Chandler said: "Against national trends, complaints locally have actually reduced over the last 12 months however a minority of people still think it is acceptable to ride or drive motor vehicles illegally on public land. We recognise and are ready for the seasonal rise in such complaints which usually happens in the spring."

Now, Police Community Support Officers from the Brislington and Bishopsworth neighbourhood policing areas have joined forces with the off-road trained police motorcyclists in their work tackling this illegal motor vehicle use.

Like their colleagues, the PCSOs also have powers to seize vehicles being used in such circumstances. This power can also be exercised retrospectively, after the rider has returned home.

Sergeant Chandler added: "We are now seizing more of these vehicles on first encounter and prosecuting the riders, who may then face disqualification. Our work with Bristol City Council is about making these places in our neighbourhoods feel safe and be safe. The extra funding will help achieve this by allowing us to increase our patrols."

If you have any information about illegal motor vehicle use in your neighbourhood, please call police on 0845 456 7000 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Yorks villains trapped by police know-how

Yorks villains trapped by police

West Yorkshire Police are laying hi-tech traps to catch burglars.

So-called 'capture houses' have been set up in burglary hotspot areas.

From the outside all looks normal. Stocked with goods visible from windows, these houses are deliberately set up by the police to tempt thieves to break into.

Inside, the 'capture houses' are equipped with the latest detection technology designed to gather evidence and gain a conviction.

Intruders are monitored by concealed CCTV and exposed to a liquid based property marking solution through which they can later be identified.

Police introduced the scheme last year in Huddersfield and Leeds. It proved such a success that it's now been extended across West Yorkshire.
