Yorks villains trapped by police know-how

Yorks villains trapped by police

West Yorkshire Police are laying hi-tech traps to catch burglars.

So-called 'capture houses' have been set up in burglary hotspot areas.

From the outside all looks normal. Stocked with goods visible from windows, these houses are deliberately set up by the police to tempt thieves to break into.

Inside, the 'capture houses' are equipped with the latest detection technology designed to gather evidence and gain a conviction.

Intruders are monitored by concealed CCTV and exposed to a liquid based property marking solution through which they can later be identified.

Police introduced the scheme last year in Huddersfield and Leeds. It proved such a success that it's now been extended across West Yorkshire.

Council wins dog fouling case - Max Pullen

Council wins dog fouling case

27 March 2008

South Gloucestershire Council has successfully prosecuted a man who refused to accept a fixed penalty notice (FPN) for not clearing up after his dog.

On Tuesday 25 March, North Avon Magistrates’ Court fined Max Pullen, formerly of Beach Road, Severn Beach, £100 and ordered him to pay £500 in costs to the council for refusing to accept the £50 FPN in relation to a dog fouling offence.

The incident happened on October 8th 2007 on a grass area by the Sea Wall in Severn Beach.

Since the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005 came into force in 2006 the council has been responsible for issuing FPNs if people fail to clear up after their dogs.

Cllr Heather Goddard, executive member for communities, said: “The council is determined to make South Gloucestershire a cleaner and greener place to live and work. To do this, we have to change the behaviour of people who cause the place to look dirty and untidy, such as letting their dogs foul in public places.

“This court ruling sends out a clear message that this kind of behaviour is not tolerated by the council.”

The council has issued 31 FPNs in relation to dog fouling in the last 18 months.

Mr Pullen has since moved out of the area and told the court he now lives in Cornwall.

Severn Beach Neighbourhood Watch Minutes - 10th March 2008
Severn Beach Neighbourhood Watch Minutes  - 10th March 2008

The main topic of conversation was the storm.  The flood agency had telephoned residents who previously registered for information with a recorded message saying there was a risk and advising people to evacuate. Peter Tyzack is to contact them to ask for more local information and this is to be brought up at the next Safer Stronger meeting. We were told that The environmental agency website also has lots of information.

Crimewatch figures have been received by e-mail available for everyone to read and there is a folder in the library section of the Post Office with up to date information for anyone to see.

Crime has been mainly car theft and minor incidents. A burglar was caught in Pilning who had previous convictions.

A young man who escaped from a secure unit in the area and allegedly assaulted a girl in Wales has been caught and is in custody.

A group of around 16 youths were causing a nuisance during the weekend with a girl screaming loudly enough to alert residents.

Weekend operations are continuing to monitor Mini motorbikes, mx'ers being riden in and around the village and at Western Approaches.  Two of these bikes have been seized and are awaiting destruction.

Double yellow lines have been covered and the road returned to its original markings outside  of Donnas home and on the junction of Station Road and Gorse Cover Road.

Western Approaches Nature Reserve is to be tidied up and the ditches on each side reinstated.

The ditch and the Oak tree at the back of Kathleen and Gregorys home is still causing them problems with no one wanting to take responsibilty. We were told that the tree along with several others has a preservation order on it and that clearance of ditches is the responsibility of each owner but as access is blocked by other residents fencing and the tree is very large and high there does not seem to be a solution.  Maybe planners should sort these things out with builders before houses are built.

We have been issued some cards for residents to write down any longer term concerns they have  One is enclosed with these minutes.

The next meeting is Monday 12th May 2008
