Car thieves are opportunists
Norfolk Constabulary's experience is that theft from motor vehicles increases at this time of year at these locations.

Their advice is be alert and aware of your surroundings, a good indication of possible problems is where you see the bright yellow, red or green florescent posters warning of car crime, take note these posters are put there as the result of previous car crime at that location.

Car thieves are opportunists and will nearly always drive to these rural locations (previous experience is usually 2 or 3 males 17 -25 yrs) they will watch and wait for motorists to leave their vehicles to follow their recreational pursuits.  A quick glance into a vehicle to see what is on display and within seconds gain entry to the car remove the rich pickings before moving on to the next car park.

The first the victim is aware is when they return to their vehicle sometimes a few hours later to find the car window broken and their property stolen.

Remember be alert and aware of your surroundings, look for the tell tale signs be especially suspicious of vehicles will all male occupants just sitting in the vehicle or who do not fit in with the type of recreational activities that others are using the car park for. If concerned make a note of the vehicle number and description of the occupants and keep it for a couple of weeks.

Even if you have parked in a reasonably secure site it is still important to take some basic precautions.
·        Lock all doors, windows and the boot.
·        Shut windows and sunroofs properly.
·        Remove the facia of CD players
·        Don't leave the keys in the ignition – even when nipping into a shop or office for a few moments, or when paying for fuel.
·        Don't leave any belongings in your car – a thief won't know that a bag or coat doesn't contain something of value, and might break a window to get to it.
·        Never leave credit cards, or chequebook, in the glove compartment – you could end up loosing a lot of money.
·        If you can't take all your belongings with you when you leave the car – lock them out of sight in the boot.

REMEMBER IT TAKES ONLY SECONDS TO BREAK INTO A CAR AND STEAL.

Congratulations!

We send our sincere congratulations to Richard Corrigan on his promotion to Chief Inspector and on the recent addition to his family. This means, unfortunately, that he leaves Filton for Southfork (Portishead HQ) but we wish him well.
