…Come along to the launch of the South Gloucestershire biodiversity action plan.

7.00pm meeting

6.15pm pre-meeting guided walk of the new proposed Local Nature Reserve led by Richard Aston. (The clocks go back the day before so it will still be light).

This will be the long awaited launch event for the Biodiversity Action Plan document. Find out what's been going on for wildlife in South Gloucestershire and if appropriate let us know what you've been doing for wildlife.

Top local produce refreshments will be available.

Severn Wonders Community Events at Severn Beach

South Gloucestershire Council has recently begun progressing proposals for a new Local Nature Reserve at Severn Beach.

To raise awareness of the proposal for a new local nature reserve, a series of community Severn Wonders Events has been arranged for January - March 2007.

Severn Beach Local Nature Reserve (Next Event) - Local Archaeology (Provisional Date of ?)

Family Fossil Hunt - 17 February 2007 - 11am Start

Join local geologist Simon Carpenter and learn more about the geology of the Severn Estuary and the dramatic story of the change from desert lands to sea me 210 million years ago.

Discover more about the fish and reptiles that lived at this time, and the fossil bones and teeth that can be found today.

Please wear warm clothing and stout boots.

Children must be accompanied for this event.

Booking not required. FREE

Birds and the importance of the saltmarsh

Date: Sunday 28th January 2007

Time: 10am start

Location: Severn Beach Sea Wall (End of Station Road)

Join Rupert Higgins and learn more about the range of birds using the Severn Estuary, their habitats and conservation needs; and the specific nature of saltmarsh, how plants cope with a harsh environment; and management and threats facing saltmarsh.

The walk will start with a look at un-grazed marsh at Severn Beach, followed by a walk to the grazed marsh at New Passage to see the differences.

Participants will have the chance to work in groups to record common species present, consider the stresses on the salt marsh, and consider its value as a habitat for plants animals. Telescopes and binoculars, will be available, however bring your own if possible. Wear warm clothing and stout boots. Booking not required.
